While battling cancer, the significance of rest and sleep cannot be overstated. Adequate rest and quality sleep play crucial roles in maintaining physical strength, promoting healing, and managing the side effects of cancer treatment. In this blog post, we will discuss the importance of rest and sleep during cancer treatment and offer practical tips to improve your sleep routine.
The Benefits of Rest and Sleep During Cancer Treatment
- Energy Conservation: Resting conserves energy, allowing your body to focus on healing and managing treatment side effects. I was advised to rest the day before chemotherapy and this really helped me a lot. I had no choice but to rest on the days after chemotherapy treatment.
- Immune System Support: Adequate sleep strengthens the immune system, essential in combating cancer and fighting infection. You really need to rest to help your immune system recover quicker.
- Emotional Well-being: Rest and quality sleep help manage stress, anxiety, and mood changes, common emotional challenges faced by cancer patients. Ensuring you rest whenever you want to, make a lot of a difference.
Tips for Improving Your Sleep Routine
- Establish a Consistent Schedule: Aim for 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night and maintain a regular sleep-wake schedule, even on weekends. It’s also a good time for you to leave things alone during the day and get some sleep. I left visitors in the living room and went to me room to get some sleep AND I did not feel bad about it. My body needed that rest. So, please do not feel bad about it.
- Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment: Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet, and invest in comfortable pillows, bedding, and a supportive mattress. You could even have soft relaxing music playing in your bedroom too.
- Practice Relaxation Techniques: Engage in calming activities before bed, such as reading, meditation, or gentle stretching exercises. I found reading a bit tiring but meditation worked really well for me. Do whatever makes you comfortable.
Prioritizing rest and sleep during cancer treatment is essential for your physical and emotional well-being. By implementing these tips, you can create an optimal environment for quality sleep and promote healing.
